WHAT IS COLONIC HYDROTHERAPY

Colonic Hydrotherapy, sometimes called colon irrigation or colon cleansing, is a gentle treatment that uses purified, temperature-controlled water to cleanse the large intestine.

During treatment, warm filtered water is introduced slowly into the colon while waste material is naturally softened and removed through a closed hygienic system. The process is designed to be comfortable, discreet and performed by a trained practitioner throughout.

Many people choose Colonic Hydrotherapy as part of their general wellbeing routine or when experiencing occasional digestive discomfort, bloating or sluggish bowel movements. It can also help people prepare for certain medical investigations when advised by a healthcare professional.

At Evolve Skin Clinic, patient comfort, privacy and safety are always our priority.

HOW DOES COLONIC HYDROTHERAPY WORK?

Colonic Hydrotherapy works by gently introducing purified warm water into the large intestine through a small sterile tube. The water softens bowel contents, encouraging the natural emptying of the colon through a completely enclosed system.

Unlike laxatives, the treatment uses the body’s own natural reflexes without harsh chemicals or medication.

Throughout your appointment, your therapist carefully controls the water flow and pressure while monitoring your comfort at all times. Gentle abdominal massage may also be used to encourage natural bowel movement where appropriate.

Each session lasts approximately 60 minutes, Consultation is required for a first treatment and aftercare advice will be given at your appointment.

Many patients report feeling lighter and more comfortable following treatment, although individual experiences vary.

COLON FACTS

  • In the UK alone, many millions of pounds is spent annually on laxatives.
  • This year an estimated 20,000 new cases of colon and rectal cancer will be diagnosed.
  • Colon cancer is believed to be the second leading cancer killer in the UK.
  • Good colon health is as much a function of the quality of food we eat.
  • The typical British diet comprises of refined, processed foods… high in saturated fats, sugar, flour, preservatives and low in fibre, inevitably causes problems for the colon. Over time, the colon will lose the ability to process vital nutrients, absorb water and to eliminate faecal matter from the body… a condition commonly known as constipation.
  • Many people are constipated without even recognising the condition! Old hardened faeces stick to the walls of the colon. The passage through which the faeces are forced to travel is much reduced, so that stools are narrow in diameter. In our society, bowel movements of the chronically constipated…may be looked upon as being ‘normal’ stools!

  • The average person has 5 to 20 pounds of accumulated waste matter in their colon.
While not a weight loss procedure…it is interesting to note that many people who complete a series of colon hydrotherapy sessions, often report significant weight losses.

COLONIC ADDITIONS

Infusions may be added to the water during a colonic treatment to relax, stimulate the release of waste or relax spasms.

A coffee enema is the insertion of organic ground coffee into the colon after a colonic hydrotherapy treatment, helping to cleanse the liver of toxins. It is then left to absorb for about 15 minutes. Toxins occur from the normal metabolisms of food as well as food and water pollutants such as pesticides, preservatives, hormones, excreted prescription drugs and fluoride.

A probiotic implant floods the gut with billions of live probiotic bacteria containing beneficial bacteria. It is used after or during a course of antibiotics which often in their quest to kill the bacteria causing the illness, destroys the guts’ beneficial bacteria at the same time, leaving you vulnerable to other ailments such as Candida Albicans. The implant is inserted by way of a small catheter and left to absorb for about 15 mins.

Enhance your Colonic Hydrotherapy treatment with a 30-minute Colon Massage. Using gentle, targeted abdominal massage techniques, this treatment is designed to encourage the natural movement of the bowel, ease abdominal tension and support digestive comfort. Many clients find it a relaxing addition that complements their Colonic Hydrotherapy session.

FAQs

Is Colonic Hydrotherapy painful?

No. Most patients find the treatment comfortable, although you may experience mild abdominal pressure or cramping as the bowel naturally contracts during treatment. Your practitioner will guide you throughout and adjust the treatment to ensure your comfort.

Appointments usually last around 60 minutes for treatment, not including your consultation. Aftercare advice will be provided at your appointment.

This depends on your individual goals, lifestyle and digestive health. Some people choose a single treatment, while others may benefit from a short course or occasional maintenance sessions. Your practitioner will advise what is most appropriate for you.

Some people choose Colonic Hydrotherapy because they experience bloating or feelings of abdominal fullness. Many patients report feeling lighter after treatment, although results vary and the treatment is not a cure for underlying digestive conditions.

Colonic Hydrotherapy may help some people experiencing occasional constipation by encouraging natural bowel emptying. If constipation is persistent, severe or associated with other symptoms, you should seek medical advice from your GP.

When performed by a trained practitioner using professional equipment and following appropriate screening procedures, Colonic Hydrotherapy is generally considered safe for suitable individuals. A consultation is always completed beforehand to assess your suitability.

We generally recommend eating a light meal a few hours before treatment and drinking plenty of water. Avoid heavy meals immediately beforehand. Your practitioner will provide full preparation advice when you book.

Continue drinking plenty of water, eating a balanced diet rich in fibre where appropriate, and follow any personalised aftercare advice provided by your practitioner.

Some people may experience temporary wind, mild cramping or increased bowel activity following treatment. These effects are usually short-lived and settle quickly.

Colonic Hydrotherapy is not suitable for everyone. Certain medical conditions, recent bowel surgery, active inflammatory bowel disease, bowel obstruction and some heart or kidney conditions may prevent treatment. Your practitioner will discuss your medical history during your consultation.

Colonic Hydrotherapy is generally not recommended during pregnancy unless specifically advised by your healthcare professional.

Very little preparation is required. Staying hydrated and eating a light meal beforehand is usually recommended. Full preparation guidance will be provided when your appointment is confirmed.

Some people notice a temporary reduction in body weight immediately after treatment due to bowel emptying. Colonic Hydrotherapy should not be considered a weight loss treatment and is not a substitute for a healthy diet and regular exercise.

Your body naturally removes waste through the liver, kidneys and digestive system. Colonic Hydrotherapy is a wellbeing treatment designed to cleanse the large intestine and support digestive comfort, but it should not be viewed as a medical detoxification treatment.

The best way to find out is by booking a consultation. We’ll discuss your medical history, digestive health and personal goals before advising whether treatment is suitable for you.
